Types of Carbon Steel Pipe Fittings

Carbon steel pipe fittings and flanges are essential components in any piping system. They connect pipes, change the direction of flow, and regulate fluid pressure. Carbon steel is a popular material for these components because it is strong, durable, and resistant to corrosion. In this section, we will discuss the different types of carbon/mild steel pipe fittings and flanges.

Butt Weld Fittings

Butt weld fittings are welded directly onto the ends of pipes to create a permanent connection. They are available in various shapes such as elbows, tees, reducers, caps, etc. Butt weld fittings have a smooth inner surface that minimizes frictional resistance and turbulence.

Socket Weld Fittings

Socket weld fittings are similar to butt weld fittings but have a socket at one end that fits over the pipe end. The other end is welded directly to the pipe. Socket weld fittings are commonly used for small-diameter pipes or high-pressure applications.

Threaded Fittings

Threaded fittings have threads on both ends that allow them to be screwed onto pipes without welding. They come in various shapes such as elbows, tees, couplings, unions, etc. Threaded fittings are easy to install and disassemble but may not be suitable for high-pressure applications.

Flanges

Flanges are flat discs with bolt holes around their circumference that connect two pipes together or attach valves or other equipment to pipes. There are several types of flanges including slip-on flanges, weld neck flanges, blind flanges, lap joint flanges and threaded flanges.

Slip-On Flange

Slip-on flange has a low hub because the pipe slips into it before welding which makes it easier to align than other types of flange when installing.

Weld Neck Flange

The Weld neck flange has a long tapered hub which provides an important reinforcement for use in several applications involving high pressure, sub-zero and/or elevated temperatures.

Blind Flange

The blind flange is used to close the end of a pipe. It is sometimes referred to as a blanking flange.

Lap Joint Flange

A lap joint flange is similar to slip-on flanges but with a radius at the intersection of the bore and the flange face to accommodate a lap stub end.

Threaded Flange

Threaded flanges are used in low-pressure applications where welding is not possible or necessary. They can also be used for small-bore piping systems.
